ROOFING TYPES

Tile Roofing

Tile roofing systems provide beauty, durability, and provide a safe roof covering. Roof tiles come in a wide variety of colors and styles. Most tiles are low maintenance, and are structurally superior to other traditional roofing materials. Most tiles come as class A fire rated, the highest fire-resistant rating available. If installed properly, tile roofs are a cost effective material choice for sloped roofing. Roof tiles are typically made of concrete or clay, which is manufactured from sand, clay or cement and water. No other roof material has the look of tile with hundreds of color choices available, making it a very popular roofing choice here in Arizona.
ROOFING TYPES

Asphalt Shingle Roofing

There are 2 types of asphalt shingles used in sloped roof construction. First, is 3-Tab Shingles, with two slots, that divide the exposed part of the shingle into thirds. The second is the architectural consisting of two layers that make it thicker and wind resistant.

Shingle strength is created by the base mat. The base material is saturated and covered with a flexible asphalt that has a high melting point. Typically, ground limestone, slate, trap rock or other inert materials are used to reinforce. The exposed top of the shingle is colored with mineral granules and helps the shingle to resist the weather and the fire.
ROOFING TYPES

Metal Roofing

Most metal roofing materials come in multiple-shingle sections or in 12- to 36-inch-wide panels. Metal roofing can be applied over rigid-foam insulation that has very high R-values. Metal roofing can save on engineering and reduce building the supporting structure.

When properly installed, metal roofing should last as long as the house, sealing out water, surviving high winds, and easily shedding snow. Metal is resistant to fire, mildew, insects, and rot. Metal reflects radiant heat from the sun, minimizing midday heat gain. You save energy needed for air conditioning during the midday.

Some types of metal roofing materials may be applied over an existing roof without the need for tear-off or additional structural support.
ROOFING TYPES

Foam Roofing

Foam roofs are common in Arizona for flat mechanical areas. They provide insulation and reflective coating to reflect heat and lower energy bills. The foam is a polyurethane foam that is sprayed directly onto a roof deck at approximately one inch thick as it is very sticky and adheres well. Sometimes it can be added to existing foam roofs in low spots. It creates a very effective water-tight seal.

The top coat over the foam is an elastomeric coating, typically white with UV reflective qualities. Typically, there are two elastomeric coats, a base and a top coat. Base is many times a different color as an indicator when the top coat is wearing though do to sun or weather damage, and will need to be re-coated every 5-7 years depending the thickness of the elastomeric coats which can increase the longevity of the foam. If the foam is not maintained properly, the foam can be compromised and the foam may need to be replaced. This means an increased cost from a re-coat to a total re-roof which means removing all the foam off the deck.
